Tim,

Prince George, BC is equipped with both Primary and a Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR). An aeronautical study is underway to evaluate potentially decommissioning the Primary Surveillance Radar (PSR).

During initial consultations, customers expressed concerns over the lack of transponder required airspace that would contain IFR aircraft during descent and transition to the instrument approaches.

To ensure that all aircraft operating at altitudes used by IFR aircraft during descent and transition to the instrument approaches are visible to air traffic controllers via the SSR while providing sufficient airspace for non-transponder equipped aircraft to safely operate, NAV CANADA is proposing to replace the current 2,200’ AGL control area extension with two new control area extensions (5,200’ ASL & 7,000’ ASL), each with a transponder requirement. The 700’ AGL transition area would remain as-is without a transponder requirement. Also proposed is an increase in the size of the control zone from 5 NM to 7 NM, with a cut out for the Otway aerodrome. The control zone would remain Class D with no transponder requirement.
